Comfort Zone Violation

Tonight was the poetry meeting, and things went well. Good feedback and some very good poems were read. Then came the end of the meeting where we decide what to write for the next month's meeting. We are to write a piece of prose poetry.

I do not like prose poetry, with or without colored pork and poultry products. The concept of a prose poem is a “poem” in the form of prose, like a short story. It is in paragraphs and not verses. It has become very popular of late, which adds to my loathing of this so called “form”.

I try to be open, and I am to most things. I can deal with a guy who got his tongue pierced. I can accept a friend who may not be “straight”, who may not even be the sex they appear to be. Okay, the last is an untested theory only, but I'd like to think it true. There are somethings though I don't want to change, and poetry is one of those.

When a poet has put words behind wonderful imagery and inside of melodic form, that to me is what a poet should be striving for. It may or may not rhyme, but there would be no mistaking a poem for a poem. A poem should not cross dress as a short story. That just goes against decent poetic values!

Well, I've said my piece, and I will not go silent into this night... but I will give in. Any ideas on the topic of my prose “poem” are welcome!
