Fellow time lords, our time is at hand once again. The British Broadcast Corporation has, in their infinite wisdom, seen fit to return everyone's favorite Dalek slayer, the Doctor, to the small screen.
It is always a great debate by whovians which actor carried the role best. While it is far beyond my power to settle this debate here, I will say that Christopher Eccleston will have his supporters. Eclectic and elusive, Eccleston gives us the qualities we want in the Doctor. At his side, the required intelligent and beautiful assistant, is skillfully played by Billie Piper. Sadly, K9 has yet to make an appearance, but I remain hopeful.
Only three episodes to date have aired, and I've managed to see two. The wonders of the Internet allow me access to a show across and ocean, seeing it no later than mere hours after the air date. The biggest challenge to getting new shows though is not a down network server or RIAA bust, but the Doctor himself; Eccleston has decided to leave the show before the first season has aired.
Apparently, the fear of being type cast is worth more the fame that can come from taking on a well known, well loved role. Is it really so bad to be type cast? To be remembered by fans for a character well played, yes that is horrible. I know that may come off as unfair or even ignorant from the point of view of an actor. I can't speak as an actor, but as a fan I want to see my favorite characters brought to life. I'd also like to add that it's not fans who type cast, fans tune in to watch the loved actor in any role – that is what makes us fans. It is the film makers and casting directors who type cast, and they are, generally speaking, not fans.
