Today started off like many others; I had plans and they didn't all happen. In this case, the failed plans in question are the result of the fairer gender's in ability to follow through on commitments. This isn't a bother though, I've long come to expect it and always have alternate plans ready to go.
Tonight's alternate plan was open mic night at the writers guild meeting. I have never read at an open mic, even though I have been on a stage many times in my life and carry none of the common fears that go along with the stage. I choose 3 poems to read, all of which have been posted here in my blog before, and headed to the meeting.
I was the 4th person to read. I was lucky in that I didn't follow another poet, but rather a man who writes those little plaques at exhibits I never read. My first poem was "Indulgence", chosen because it is simple and would give me a chance to relax on stage. As is custom in a reading, I provided the audience with the background of the poem: Internet dating, which got quite a few laughs.
Next poem was "Diagnosis", which gained me a very encouraging applause. Last was "Where the Week Ends." After everyone finished, and upcoming events were mentioned by the guild president, social time began. I normally just grab some food for the road, and head out, fully aware of my "never was" status. Sure, most people there are "has beens", but that is a far better position because it means at some point in time, they "were."
No such luck escaping tonight, as several people stopped to tell me they liked my poems and which one was their favorite. I took this all in as just simple Southern hospitality, and let none of it go to my head. Right before the door, a man who read a portion from a book I found quite interesting, stopped me to add his compliments to the total. Since I had his attention, I asked him a few questions on his book. After our mutual realization neither of us had mastered any of the dark arts of literature, I stood to leave when his aging friend said to me, "You should do comedy."
Now, I admit I have a good sense of humor. This comment though caught me completely out of left field. Comedy? Stand up? Is this a veiled insult to my poetry? No, her face was sincere. I took up a lengthy discussion with this odd woman to find out the backdrop to this unexpected comment.
Eventually it was revealed to me, she at one time worked with writers on Hee-Haw. I knew of the show, and yes, I was impressed. She told me of how the writers would work to come up with new material, and gave me insight as to when to began preforming comedy. She also told me of how she helped discover Garth Brooks, which was quite an interesting tale, even if I will carry my doubts of it's validity.
I took down her contact information, and promised to contact her should I ever make an open mic appearance for comedy. I know there have been such nights in Knoxville, so I'll have to let this idea roll around in my head for a while. Should I decide to make an appearance, comedy or poetry, I'll be sure to invite my loyal blog readers to the event. Both of you!
