Hell in a hand basket

It seems to me the mainstream media is getting worse. More and more I have come to distrust any information received though radio and television, and question anything in print. Where have all the journalists gone?

Like every great media whirlwind, the rule is make the front page sell, then print a retraction on page 32 next week. Remember how we all read and heard reports of the fall of civilization in New Orleans? People attacking rescuers, rapes and murders in the Superdome, and piles of bodies stacked in the seats? Yea, funny thing that - it seems no one was checking facts. I can understand not wanting to risk your life to fact check the story, but if you don't fact check it - don't run it.

You know what is great about the internet? You can edit your stories so you don't get caught running hype as easily. Google News for "superdome dead", and go back to around August 31. There are two news stories of the "1,000's possibly" dead in the superdome, one by CBS, the other NBC. If you click though to the stories though, you'll find they have been changed.

Don't get me wrong, shit happened down there. I don't doubt that. It just wasn't the hell on earth that filled Headline News for almost a week straight.

Next, apparently ignoring the news of Abu Ghraib and what it means to the military operation as a whole was a bad thing. It has become worse. Now, US soldiers are trading photos of dead and mutilated Iraqis for porn. When Abu Ghraib came to light, the US government blamed it on a few individuals. The media was happy to take this at face value, and the issue was closed. No one felt like asking the question, "what happens to an over extended military, acting as a occupation force, comprised mostly of 18-20 year olds with poor senior leadership they cannot believe in?" It would have been nice if the media didn't let this fence get whitewashed over. I hope our next US president gives great head, because we are going to have to do a lot of blow jobs in the UN parking lot to get a few friends back.

A government watch dog group listed the 13 "most corrupt" members of congress... but can't fault the media for not running that story; even I don't believe we have a single honest person in DC anymore.

Last, a news story for the HNT players. You might wanna get your resume in shape, incase you get fired. It seems that having a bsdm site is not allowed if you work for sony. I've already told my boss, should anyone come up to him and say, "I think there are half-nekkid photos out there of Mike" he can respond, "yes, I know about those." (If he's looking at the posts or not is something I'm better off not knowing. Sexual favors for employment is only supposed to happen if it's man and woman, or woman and woman).

A few months after I started blogging, I got a couple of emails from readers who were giving me a heads up that people DO get fired because of their blog.
I decided then and there to never write about my job. And to keep my real name and place of employment off of my blog. The last thing I need is the owner's daughter reading my blog on her off time from college partying and then reporting to daddy that some blog chic is calling him an asshole.
Not that I would ever say that. ;)

Interesting blog! I found it yesterday through a link on another blog, that I found through another blog and so on and so forth. Anyway, I totally agree that the media blows way too many things out of proportion and then the things that should be paid attention to just get pushed aside. I am not sure we ever had a honest person in DC and I know of a man that got into some serious trouble at work because of his blog. He almost lost his job over it. Anyway, I have enjoyed your reading your blog and cute kids!
