What the hell is this handbasket for?

Things that have pissed me off this past week:

(Warning: I would have flagged this post as possibly offensive, but I cannot do that - even though a reader can report me for not having flagged it. This fact was later added to my list).

The MPAA and RIAA never stop. Suing little girls is not enough, they need more. Twice they have tried to get a law requiring a broadcast flag that would allow them to block recording of TV and radio, as well as allow them to decide when, where and who gets to see it. Once it was even allowed by the FCC and soon smacked down by the courts in quick order.

Well, it's back, this time they are playing it safe: buying off our congress (who probably go for pretty cheap these days so this is also a cost effective move for investors). The irony of this? It's going to stop no one but a few home users and some teachers taping a show for class. I've already met with the other alpha geeks, the mod chips are already in production.

Next up, Gov. Arnold, CA. (WTH am I still a registered Republican? Oh yea, the Democrats can't get their act together and the Libertarians have other issues.) The Gov'ner signed into law a bill making it illegal to sell violent and/or sexual video games to minors. Nothing wrong there, just forgot to define "violent" (ignoring that the game industry has defined it). I'm sure the CA courts are fair and balanced and this won't be an issue.

Last, EDL has not seen Strange Brew. (No, that didn't piss me off). I wanted to rent it, but it a world of crap, it could not be found. There is a small, independently owned video rental store, and they had a copy on VHS. Happy I had located a copy, I pulled out my Debit card to hand over hard earned dollars for quality entertainment.

No, I had not rented here before.

Yes, here is my drivers license.

No the address is not current, but here is my voter's registration card where it is correct.

Yes, I have my social security card (btw, you know you're not allowed to use this?).

No I don't have a credit card, but my debit card will work the same.

No, no credit cards; I had them, TBIM fucked up my credit, now I don't want them.

Home phone? I have a cell phone, no home phone.

WTF do you mean you need a current statement from a utility provider?

NO DAMNIT I DON'T HAVE A HOME PHONE! Cell phone, in my hand, see? No need to spend an extra $30 bucks a month for something I'm only going to get telemarketers interrupting my Deep Space 9 time.

OKAY BITCH, FUCK YOUR GOD DAMN VHS TAPE! You could run my card right now, and know that it's covered. Further, you could run my card if I don't bring back this VHS tape for the $3.50 it's worth. I have overdraft protection, so you're covered even if I'm not. And guess what, the bank will change me $25 for the trouble of covering my $3.50, which plus the rental fee will put me out by 3 TIMES THE COST OF BUYING THE DAMN DVD!

I hope combined crap puts this little shop of horrors out of business.

Why are you a republican? Is it just a requirment because you are from texas? Do you get lynched in the streets if you are seen w/ a rainbow on your car? Is the only reason you don't vote Dem is so they don't take your guns away? Come on in this 1984-esque Republican "values" society they are much more likely to want to create a police state in which the gov. has the rights to weapons and the people don't. Baby i am a liberatrian - but they have their heads up their asses too. There is no such thing as a perfect politian. It's all about the lesser of (enter whatever number you may wish)*42* evils. Arnold - there are a million reasons to hate him - this wouldn't even make my top ten list.

Think netflix.

I've never seen strange brew either.

I have never in my life had a credit card. I do own a home - and didn't need a creditcard to get that - so why do i need one for Blockbuster? I have been denied the right to enter a club or purchase smokes (i'm a while quit now) becuase some dumbass didn't know what a passport was - if that helps put it all in perspective.

This is the problem at the moment with the GOP. The image is that Republican = Christian Conserative, which isn't even the largest group in the party (though they are by far the loudest).

I am republican because it is (still) the most likely party to offer up a conserative for office, and as a registered member I can vote for that person to get the nomination. That's what I am, a consertive - less goverment is better goverment.

You bring up the second admendment. My view is that the use of the second admendment is not inline with the wording in the bill of rights. I do not read it as every tom, dick and harry's right to carry a glock in his pickup's glovebox. It starts out with "A well regulated Militia...". We can debate the need for people's militias in a free state, this is however a seperate issue from "gun control" which I do believe needs to be better... well, any control. Irony here is this very admendment is inplace to stop the "police state" you mention.

Another example; abortion. No where is an unborn child given rights legally in the Constitution. In fact, I'm pretty sure this only comes as the result of court cases - there is no law anywhere (just case law). Since an unborn child is not a legal US citizen, it then is a moral question only, and a moral question is guided by religious beliefs. Since the state "shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" this issue of abortion is not a matter to consider for or against.

I have a blockbuster and a hollywood video card - both obtained without a credit card. It's only this locally store asking for such. I tried netflix, and after 6 months got tired of the game they play.
