Don't let the new design fool you, after learning
what my blog is worth, I'm here to collect. I'm not sure why, but google thinks the best way for this to happen is coffee ads. I'm not one to question google, after all they have a wildy successful IPO and I... don't.
So, let's talk coffee. I like my coffee like I like my women... hot, strong, and with a spoon. I'll give you a moment to let that image sink in.
Okay, if you're still here and haven't clicked the coffee banner to escape (and if you want to escape, that is the way!), then let's get down to a good cup of coffee.
First, keep your grounds air tight (that bag / can is not air tight) and do not keep them in the fridge or freezer. Everytime they come out of the cold they hit moisture, and moisture kills the flavor. Next get yourself one of those lifetime filters (there is no reason to get the gold mesh, other than it won't look as stained as the plastic mesh). Also, get a funnel the filter can sit inside of, and a thermos to catch with. (For a thermos to keep stuff cold or hot longer, always pre-heat or pre-cool the thermos by running hot/cold water though it.)
Bitter coffee comes from *not enough* grounds. Think of it this way, 3/4 of the grounds are the Columbian heaven you dream about and the last 1/4 is ass from New Jersey. If you over-soak the grounds, you soak out the ass. So by adding more gounds, we don't over-soak to the last 1/4, and just get the pureness man and donkey alike can enjoy. I use a quarter of a cup per cup of coffee (a mug cup, not a measured up). That may seem excessive, but try it before you dismiss it.
Bring water to boil, then remove it and let it rest for a moment. You want the temp to be just under boiling. Now this may take a few moments, but pour the water slowly into the filter (I hope you figured out at this point you should have the filter filled with grounds, inside the funnel, sitting on top of the preheated thermos. If not, good thing you read all the directions first!). I fill a 4 cup thermos and this takes about 3 minutes.
Last, when you are adding sugar or cream to your coffee, take the remaining hot water and pour it over your hand. The searing pain and blistering will serve to remind you not to mess up the coffee. If you want something sugary and sweet, drink a Dr. Pepper. You'll still get the caffeine.
