King Kong. King Kong!
King-fucking-Kong!
Yes, it's been a while since my last post. Time to blog has been hard to come by, but never fear, I'm still here and I'm still boycotting Sony (I have a Sony update to post later, gotta keep up the google rankings you know). Before I get into my normal rhetoric, I want to take a moment to talk of the latest movie from Peter Jackson.
I went to see King Kong last night, chosen after reading that the Aeon Flux movie, as I had guessed, sucked major ass. I confess I was not caught up in the hype of this film, and if EDL hadn't expressed interest I would have waited for the DVD. My initial reaction when I heard Mr. Jackson was going to remake King Kong was "WTF, he can do anything he wants and he chose to do a remake?" Well, to save you the burden of reading further, he made one helluva remake.
The plot is unchanged, and for the most part the same key lines are used. I would not have minded changes to some of the lines, the famous last line by Denham, "Oh no, it wasn't the airplanes; it was beauty killed the beast" never made much sense to me. I always took the movie to show man as the real beast, but I can see the message that getting involved with a leggy blonde will mess up your life. Both are equally important lessons to learn.
Peter Jackson does an awesome job directing this movie. You can tell how he kept the original's 1930's style and blended it with modern practices. Portrait style actor close ups are mixed with jarring action shots. The CG Kong is a real as any of the flesh and blood actors on the screen, and in my view has a better mastery of displaying emotions than many so called "academy award winning" actors. One noticeable change Jackson made was making Kong act much more like the gorilla he is related to than a man in an ape suit, and it was for the better.
Jack Black, whom I love (we all should own a copy of
Tenacious D and
School of Rock) did not screw up this movie. I've only ever seen Black do one type of character, i.e. himself. Even though he's typical Jack Black, it's perfect for the character of Carl Denham.
Bottom line is this is a great movie, and one you should see on the big screen.
