DragonCon: Day 1

My first day of DragonCon is now over.  If you're looking for the photos of the almost naked chicks, find that on my flickr site.  A recap of the day:

  • We arrived in Atlanta around 1pm.  It then took another 2 hours to find the hotel and check in.  Moral of the story: don't trust mapquest with downtown Atlanta.
  • The first stop was the vendor shops.  I found a signed copy of a Supergirl vs. Teen Titans (for my girls, of course) and a hot-off-the-press copy of the Myth Adventures: Vol 1 by Robert Aspin.
  • I met Mr. Aspin's favorite artist, Phil Foglio, and he autographed my new book.
  • I met Mr. Aspin himself and had the honor of being the first person to show him his new book (he hadn't even seen a copy form the publisher).  Mr. Aspin autographed the new book, and a book I brought along for dad.
  • Cicelie met Stephanie Pui-Mun Law, a popular Elfwood artist, and purchased one of her prints.  She also took home a dragon that sits on her shoulder.
  • We sat in a round table session with the writers and voices of The Venture Bros.  I apologise for the fact I don't know which of the writers and voices were there - I only find the show to be average.  I did get to hear "the Monarch" say there were no snakes on the plane.
  • We went to a "How to make an Anime Music Video" session that was a huge let down.  The presenters moved at a snails pace, talked mostly of getting dvd video loaded in Adobe Premire Pro, and were wrong in many of the technical explanations.  I had hoped for this to be more geared to answering questions of how to story board, how to lip scyn, and how to apply many other effects seen in popular anime music videos.
  • For a late dinner / snack we stayed near the hotel and ate at Ray's in The City.  There was a live band, a female singer on piano and a backup guitarist who also worked the drum machine.  The food was good if overpriced, but the live music made the evening.

That was a joke, of course. This stuff isn't my bag, but I'll bet it's fun to see all the cool costumes.
