In 1965 Bob Dylan was on tour in England and it was being filmed by D. A. Pennebaker. At some point they got the idea to film a short segment where Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues would play while Dylan would stand in front of the camera, and instead of singing would hold cue cards with portions of the (sometimes incorrect) lyrics, dropping the cards as the song went on. Later it was filmed as a video, and I found the video version on YouTube.
Dylan's video has been imitated and parodied over the years, though the best parody would have to go to Weird Al Yankovic's Bob video in which every card is a palindrome. I think even Colbert's WØrd owes a little something to Dylan.
Let's be clear, Terra Naomi is no Dylan. That's not meant as a insult, Dylan's lyrics define a genre. Terra is more pop, less folk, and her song "Say It's Possible" is just the emo-chick rock you would expect (and the kind I secretly code too). What is noteworthy here is her video for the song. Terra has taken Dylan's cue cards and combined them with Internet video sharing. On her website, Terra asked fans to send in videos of themselves holding a card answering the question: What would you do or want if anything was possible? To some this isn't earth shattering, but I do like the idea of using the web to collaborate in new ways.
Here is the video:
