New CamStudio 2.5 Coming

A while back I blogged about my search for a good screen capture program.  To save you the trouble, the end was result was I didn't find an editor I liked but I found CamStudio was by far my favorite recorder.  Now Nick Smith is set to release an updated version - it's been a few years since the last release.

CamStudio has a history behind it - it was originally developed by RenderSoft who were bought by eHelp so they could put the technology in a product called RoboDemo.  Macromedia (now owned by Adobe) bought eHelp to turn RoboDemo into Captivate (a very expensive solution for screen casting).  Since CamStudio did some things (for free) that Macromedia wanted to keep pay only, they released v2.1 which required you to register and also removed some features (like export to flash).

Nick has come along and tracked down most developers of the 2.0 version of CamStudio and started the project from that point as open source.  Most of the features will be in 2.5 as well as some new features, but there are some features that had to be removed because he hasn't found the original developer to get the rights to release the code as open source.

Enough history, you can see a video of the new version at Nick's blog.
